Autorenporträt
Elaine Reidy served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the from 1963 to 1965. She was evacuated from the Dominican capital by U. S. Marines in the wake of a violent revolution and civil war.

After returning to the , she embarked on a long and successful career as a book and paper conservator. She was chief of the celebrated book conservation studio of Carolyn Horton before moving to the New York Public Library as Book Conservator. Ms. Reidy served for 17 years as Head of the Conservation Laboratory at the New York Academy of Medicine. She also taught book conservation at the Graduate School of Information Sciences at of the City University of New York, ending her career as Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Antorchas Foundation in , lecturing in Spanish on book and paper conservation.

Since settling in , Ms. Reidy has written two novels in addition to The Shortest Way Home.
