The hot September day that witnesses the last great trial of strength between Cross and Crescent opened an epoch in European history that lasted until the cataclysm of the First World War in 1914.

John Stoye was among the foremost historians of 17th-century Europe; he was Tutor in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1948 to 1984 and a Fellow of the college for 68 years. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 99.
