I WISH to anticipate any adverse criticism that may be made upon the following pages, by being as frank with the public as I trust the critics will be fair with me.
Therefore I must say at the beginning that I expect many well-meaning people to differ with me as to the propriety of giving this book to the public; but I am exceedingly hopeful that that difference will not amount to a serious condemnation. Nor can I think it will when I earnestly assert that I have caused its publication out of as honest a motive as I ever possessed; and I am sure that whatever the American people have come to think of me in other respects, they are pretty certain of my honesty.

Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884) was an influential figure in the development of the detective profession in the United States. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Pinkerton immigrated to the US in 1842, where he initially worked as a barrel maker. His discovery of a counterfeiting operation led to his appointment as the first detective in Chicago. In 1850, he founded Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which grew to be one of the most famous private law enforcement organizations. Pinkerton's contributions to criminal investigations, including surveillance techniques and the establishment of a rogues' gallery, were pivotal to the evolution of law enforcement practices. He also served as the head of the Union Intelligence Service during the Civil War. Pinkerton's work extended to the literary domain, authoring several books that explore the intricate dynamics of crime and investigation. Among his works, 'The Spiritualists and the Detectives' (1877) encapsulates his incisive approach to unmasking deception.
