These works became the beating heart of the GWR's vast empire, where majestic engines were built and maintained by some of the most skillful and inventive engineers of the day. Retired GWR railwayman Ken Gibbs presents a comprehensive portrait of the works from Brunel to the final days of steam in the mid-twentieth century, and beyond to the rediscovery and renovation of many of the workshops for their unique heritage.

Autorenporträt
Ken Gibbs spent his career working for the GWR, staring an apprenticeship into Fitting, Turning and Steam Locomotive Erecting in 1944. He was the fourth generation of his family to do so, following his great grandfather in 1849, his grandfather in 1875, and his father in 1909. After a period in the RAF he returned to the shop floor in 1953, later become an industrial consultant on Plant Maintenance. He retired early and joined the GW Society at Didcot and the Firefly project. Constructing a broad guage replica from scratch, a 23-year project for which he became technical director. He also writes history books.
