His magnum opus, 'The Thousand Buddhas,' recounts his archaeological and explorative works in Chinese Central Asia, which includes the now world-famous Caves of the Thousand Buddhas near Dunhuang. This work is a meticulous documentation of the frescoes, sculptures, and manuscripts he discovered, and stands as a testament to the cultural richness of the Silk Road.
