According to refugees from Yosef's hometown, the boy is the only child to escape the clutches of a mysterious enemy known as the Black Assailant who led an attack on their village. Ninthalas is plagued by questions over Yosef's mixed roots and peculiar circumstances. He vows to bring Yosef north with the hope of providing him a safe place should the boy's memories resurface.
