Alfred Wilks Drayson (1827 1901) was an English army officer, writer, and astronomer. Born in 1827, he led a varied and fascinating life that blended military service with intellectual pursuits. Drayson served in the British Army and became known for his contributions to astronomy, particularly for his work on the stars and celestial phenomena. In addition to his scientific endeavors, he was a prolific writer, and his literary works included novels, essays, and stories of adventure. He was also a close friend of Arthur Conan Doyle, who dedicated his short story collection The Captain of the Polestar to Drayson. Drayson s literary output reflected his interests in both military life and the mysteries of the natural world, with many of his works featuring adventurous themes set against historical backdrops. Though he enjoyed a quiet life, his work influenced the realm of adventure literature. Drayson passed away in 1901 at the age of 74. His legacy endures through his contributions to both literature and astronomy. Drayson s family included his children, such as Ellen Mary Isabel Drayson, and his grandchildren, Hugh Edward Wrottesley and Maud Ellen Wrottesley.
