Gerald Straßer ist dreizehn Tage nach dem Beginn des 2. Weltkrieges in Hamburg geboren. Eine Bombardierung ihres Wohnhauses zwang die Familie 1944 dazu, zu Verwandten nach Mecklenburg in eine relative Sicherheit zu übersiedeln. Hier verbrachte Gerald Straßer nach ein paar Schulwechseln seine Schulzeit. Mit 18 Jahren flüchtete er schließlich aus der DDR zu seinen Großeltern väterlicherseits nach Schweinfurt, wo er eine Fotografenlehre machte. Durch einen Verwandten seiner Tante kam er 1959 zur Firma Henkel, wo er 35 Jahre als Werkfotograf tätig war. Bei den regelmäßigen Feierlichkeiten der Familie Henkel hatte er die Gelegenheit, viel Prominenz aus Politik und Kultur vor die Kamera zu bekommen. Vom Bild hat er sich schließlich dem Text zugewandt. ¿Der Frauenplanet¿ ist sein erster Roman.
