Lighthearted at times, the protagonist must be brutally honest with himself and face his fears of his own mortality juxtaposed to the overwhelming physical demands he has imposed on himself in undertaking the trek. He ultimately transforms himself from a man fearing death without actually having lived into the self-empowering person he always wanted to be after realizing that his only barrier was himself.
