Life is a circle. Within its turning resides Witches whose souls are capable of transmigration thereby making them all but immortal, ordinary humans called Tanai, and aliens, some of whom possess certain abilities with magic. Within the circle resides conflict. The gateway opens to a world called Slievgall'ion and was established as a means to rejuvenate a devastated planet Earth. This is not the only treasure she holds, though. For she harbors within her the slumbering souls of two of the ancient sisters who created the gateway. The third, Nemhain, is very much alive within flesh and blood of her own and desires the awakening of her sisters for the purpose of opening the way. Her desire is not for the sake of rejuvenating a planet, however. Nemhain wishes to destroy all who are not of her line and to take dominion over both worlds.
In the midst of a great battle of Witches, humans, and aliens, Nemhain sees the awakening of her sisters and the opening of the gateway but her body is killed before she can take control. As is the case for Witches, her soul survives and forces its transmigration into Caer's body where she besets the souls of her sisters. Only the death of Caer's body can force the souls out. She begs her human friend, Brandon to kill her.
With Caer's death, all the souls are released, though Caer's is coaxed back to her body and is blasted through to Slievgall'ion. There, she wakes to learn that those who stood nearest her in that great battle were also blasted through. They have no way of knowing the fate of Earth - whether it was reborn to abundance or destroyed it. They know only that the souls of the three sisters now lie within Slievgall'ion and that Nemhain's daughter, son, and husband have been loosed to plague this new world.
The circle turns as the war begins anew.
