Tolstoy wrote this confession in 1879, but the authorities did not allow it to be printed in Russia. Therefore, it was printed in Geneva, Switzerland, as were the second and third books. These books have been translated into all living languages. The translator draws the readers' attention to an important fact before reading this confession: that Tolstoy describes the dark days of his disbelief in order to make them a prelude to the bright days of his faith.
