On the North West frontier of the British Empire, Afghanistan was a country never quite subdued. To the north, Russia began to flex its muscles in a clandestine operation known to the British as "The Great Game" and to the Russians as "The Tournament of Shadows." A small band of British agents and adventurers find themselves in mortal danger as the game turns deadly serious in a fight for land and mineral resources that will shape the next century.
Europe's peace, always fragile is not just threatened from afar but a resurgent Germany enters the game at a crucial moment. The last years of the 19th century would re-shape the world in the 20th century in horrorific ways no one could then have imagined.
William Dexter a freewheeling, resourceful but troubled agent of the British government has little time to consider his own safety as he crosses half the globe to deliver Britain's secret weapon in the forthcoming struggle with Germany. Dark unseen forces are also marshalling their troops and before long William finds himself battling a new kind of enemy, a foe whose single minded cunning and capacity for violence exceeds even the most ruthless of nation states. Only by putting himself and those closest to him into extreme peril will he have any chance of survival let alone success. The price of failure would strike a terrible blow to the heart of the country William called home.
Kidnap, murder and extortion have long been the tools of the world's predators and eventually the victims are left with no option but to fight back with equal force and cunning. Great nations and criminals alike do battle for supremacy as a new century approaches, a time when industrial secrets will become as vital as political and military advantages. Great Britain must stay ahead in the game or its very survival will come in to question. For William Dexter and his comrades failure is simply not an option.
