Autorenporträt
Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet and author, best known for his picaresque novels, which reflected his experiences and observations of contemporary society. Smollett was born in Dalquhurn, now part of Renton, Dumbartonshire, Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow, initially studying medicine, and later served as a surgeon's mate during the War of the Austrian Succession. His first success in the literary world was the novel 'Roderick Random' (1748), which gained him recognition for its vivid characters and satirical view of British life. Similar themes were continued in 'Peregrine Pickle' (1751) and 'Sir Launcelot Greaves' (1762), consolidating his reputation as a central figure in 18th-century English literature. Smollett's travel literature, notably 'Travels through France and Italy' (1766), highlights his keen observation and the descriptions of social conditions, traditions, and the character of the people he encountered. This work reflects his sharp critique as well as his moments of empathy and personal reflection. In 'Travels through France and Italy,' Smollett's acerbic style and the accuracy with which he depicts the countries he visits, mark him as an early and influential travel writer. Smollett also worked as an editor and translator, noteworthy for his completion of a comprehensive translation of 'Don Quixote' (1755), which further attests to his literary versatility. Despite facing personal tragedies and challenges throughout his life, Smollett's contributions to literature remain enduring, and his work continues to be studied for its insight into 18th-century life and its intrinsic literary value.
