Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet and author, best known for his picaresque novels, which reflected his experiences and observations of contemporary society. Smollett was born in Dalquhurn, now part of Renton, Dumbartonshire, Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow, initially studying medicine, and later served as a surgeon's mate during the War of the Austrian Succession. Similar themes were continued in 'Peregrine Pickle' (1751) and 'Sir Launcelot Greaves' (1762), consolidating his reputation as a central figure in 18th-century English literature.
