This short nineteenth-century American novel about 'English Domestic Life' is interesting for the way it models the tradition of the Victorian novel from reading rather than experience. Farro was an African-American woman who obviously read Charles Dickens and probably Jane Austen, and chooses to write an 'English' novel by genre rather than an 'American' one. (Goodreads)
