R. M. (Robert Michael) Ballantyne (1825–1894) was a prolific Scottish author of juvenile fiction who wrote more than 100 books. He was part of the famous Ballantyne family that was closely associated with the vocation of publishing. Born into a legacy of literature and book production, R. M. Ballantyne honed his writing skills early in life. Before settling into his writing career, Ballantyne ventured to Canada at the age of 16 and worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. His experiences in the North American wilderness would later profoundly influence his literary work. Returning to Scotland in 1847, he gave up business pursuits and devoted himself entirely to writing. His works often contain detailed descriptions of various activities and are characterized by their realism, informed by his first-hand experiences. A standout title among his extensive bibliography is 'The Coral Island', which remains a beloved classic for its adventure narrative and depth of description.
