Uranus Uranus, Ice Giants, Outer Planets Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and is classified as an ice giant due to its composition, which includes significant amounts of water, ammonia, and methane ice. Its blue-green color is caused by methane in the atmosphere absorbing red wavelengths of sunlight. The planet's unique axial tilt of 98 degrees results in extreme seasonal changes, with each pole experiencing 42 years of continuous daylight or darkness. Uranus has 27 known moons, five major ones, and a system of faint rings. Discovered in 1781 by William Herschel, it was the first planet identified with a telescope.
