Phil Gifford is an award-winning broad-caster and sports journalist. He is the author of 18 books, was the first person to be twice chosen as the New Zealand Sports Journalist of the Year, and was awarded the 2010 SPARC lifetime achievement award for services to sports journalism. He says that in the course of writing Valerie Adams' life story, 'my wife Jan and I fell in love with the girl. The private person is just as wonderful as the champion athlete.'
