William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was a British novelist and author. He is known for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. During the Victorian era Thackeray was ranked second only to Charles Dickens, though Thackeray saw himself as writing in the realistic tradition, and distinguished his work from the exaggerations and sentimentality of Dickens.
