Volunteering in her metro area provided Melisa Mel many opportunities to meet interesting people with stories to tell. She found that the characters leaned on others for assistance and safety while trying to regain some sort of balance in their lives. These characters have felt violated, cheated, confused, scared, insecure, ashamed, guilty, impotent and many times numb with shock. Melisa Mel has recorded their stories here. As the characters lives have calmed and their minds have sought peace, they have transitioned and adapted to their situations. Some characters grew stronger, others needed more time for a sense of normalcy to return. Autorenporträt
Volunteering is a great way to give back to society and keep life in perspective. Melisa Mel is a regular volunteer in her metro area. She enjoys going to homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, soup kitchens, rehab centers, local police departments, LGBT support centers and straight to the streets. She makes contact with people from all walks of life with all sorts of struggles. She feels honored to be allowed into their space and to learn how she can better serve others through their needs. Through her volunteer work, Melisa Mel has found that people who struggle are in either in the "victim stage" or in the "survivor mode". Regardless of where they are in their lives, Mel found that she was able to learn much from reflecting on each person's situation. Vulnerable populations touch a special place in Melisa Mel's heart and that is what inspired her to share these stories. After teaching English as a Second Language for 18 years overseas in Spain and teaching Severe Disabilities/Aggressive Autism for 10 years in the Arizona Public School, Melisa Mel is transitioning professionally from teaching to working for vulnerable populations in a police setting assisting victims of sex crimes. Her passions lie in the arenas of teaching, social working, and policing. She brings all these areas together in her dealings with the people she encounters through her volunteer work. On her spare time, Melisa Mel writes. She has written The Great Wall of POPAT: a Journal of a Lesbian's Adventures Getting through Police Academy and Mel's Adaptive Physical Education Program. Passion for assisting those without a voice pushes Melisa Mel forward on her many goals and projects. She holds a Master's degree in English as a Second Language from the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Madrid and a Master's degree in Special Education/Education from ASU. She is currently working on her dissertation for her PhD in Psychology.
