Naval VCs have been won in places as far apart in time and distance as the Baltic in 1854 and Japan in 1945, in the trenches from the Crimea to the Western Front, in harbours from Dar es Salaam to Zeebrugge, from the Barents to the Java Sea, from New Zealand to the North Atlantic, and from China to the Channel. Autorenporträt

John Winton is widely known as the novelist and historian who specialises in stories of the sea. He served in the Royal Navy from 1949, when he joined as a cadet, to 1963, when he retired as Lieutenant Commander, having served in the Korean War, at Suez and for several years in submarines. He is now a full time writer, not only of novels, but of articles and books on a wide range of subjects, from a history of the Festiniog Railway to a life of Sir Walter Raleigh.
