Jake and his Dad live in a remote part of the Wairarapa, where they can surf, hunt, fish, and watch the whales feeding as they pass up and down the coast. For Jake it's a paradise that he hopes will never change. Milton Summer is an international rock star who has built a private retreat overlooking Whale Pot Bay, hoping for much the same privacy and enjoyment of life that Jake treasures. Both of these dreams are are shattered when visitors arrive, some invited, others not. Jake's life takes a dive when his dad begins a relationship with a new partner, who moves in with her daughter, Stephanie. For Milton, trouble comes in the form of a local photographer who starts stalking the star seeking sensational images worth a fortune. Then a whale and her calf get into trouble on the dangerous coast and it appears the history of whale slaughter in the bay is doomed to repeat itself. If Jake, Milton and Stephanie are to overcome these deadly waves of destructive forces then they must work as a team, always aware that failure could mean more than just the whales dying.

Autorenporträt

Des Hunt was a science and technology teacher for many years, interspersed with periods of curriculum development both in New Zealand and overseas. During this time he had several textbooks published to support the New Zealand curriculum. In recent years he has looked at other ways of interesting youngsters in science, creating computer games and writing non-fiction and fiction with scientific themes.

After living in Auckland for much of his life he moved with his wife, Lynne, to Matarangi on New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula. He retired from the classroom in 2007 to concentrate on writing fiction for children. He continues his aims of fostering young peoples' natural interest in the science of their surroundings by visiting schools and libraries where he runs workshops and presentations.
