The quantity read does not replace quality, but reading a book that stirs the stagnant pond, raises questions, opens paths of research and discovery, raises astonishment, and suggests more problems and questions. In this sense, reading is sailing to new worlds, exploring unknown islands, and exploring pristine horizons. Then the reader, like Hayy bin Yaqzan, will have the qualities of life and alertness from the act of reading and building his identity. Identity is not something accomplished, but rather one creates it as a result of contact, acculturation, the extent of his acceptance of the different other, and knowledge of himself through knowing himself in the mirror of the other. In this sense, reading is a constructive act for the self, not a culture of ready-made answers and a self closed in on itself, eliminating those who differ from it. A self that seeks questions and pleads with confusion in cognitive humility, and with the word - and in the beginning was the word - the mind and heart open together to the meaning of toil, process, and becoming together, since knowledge is evaluation, reform, erasure, and confirmation, as Gaston Bachelard sees.
