What She Left Behind: by Ellen Marie Wiseman Conversation Starters

The history of mental illness is a dreary and shocking one. Even today we have little understanding of many types of mental illnesses, and some of them have yet to be diagnosed, let alone cured. However, the past of mental asylums in different parts of the world leaves much to be desired. What She Left Behind explores this past in detail, and especially what it meant to be a woman at a time when a family could send her off to an asylum if she became troublesome. Isabelle, a young woman trying to survive the foster system, begins to poke into the past in 1995 when an asylum closed, and she digs deeper into the lives of the people there, especially of a woman named Clara Cartwright, who faced this fate.
