The novel's events revolve around an illegitimate foundling named "Matvey" who was taken care of by the church deacon "Larion". The compassionate "Larion" drowns and dies, so care is transferred to "Titov", the owner of authority in the "Soluki Farm". What Tavi became attached to the church and to the love of God, but his closeness to Titov enabled him to view the farm's records, and his outlook on life began to change when he discovered the exploitation and plunder that was taking place. Titov to the farmers in the name of the Church!... The events in the novel continue until Matvey grows up and falls in love with Titov's daughter, whom he grew up with. He wanted to have a relationship with her, but Titov forced him to abandon his principles in order to achieve that desire. Matvey did not hesitate to please Titov even though he was experiencing an intense conflict, and when his wife died And his daughter began his crazy journey in search of God to get rid of his internal torment and moved from one monastery to another.
