Lawson and Lawson automobile dealership of shiny cars and smelly new interior were the love ofhis life until a drop dead gorgeous lady stepped across the threshold of his office. He fell victin to cupid's arrow on day one and proposed on day two. One week later, with Lana Elkington at his side, Bruce Lawson stood before the minister in a wedding chapel at Las Vegas, where the couple repeated the wedding vows and promised to love one another til death they do part.

Eight months later with a baby in the incubator, Bruce and his best buddy, Richard Graves receive mobilization orders to leave immediately for Ft. Carson, Colorado.

The transfer from the snow covered landscape of Ft. Carson to the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin in California two weeks later was like taking flight from the North Pole and landing in hell. The six weeks of special desert maneuvers made them soldier strong and except for the heartbreak of leaving his wife and baby behind he was ready as the next soldier for a year of tour duty in Iraq.

During the brief 24-hour leave before their final departure, Bruce held his infant daughter ever so tenderly and marveled at her perfection. He filed each feature of her face to memory to be called upon during the trying times on the battle-field.

In the motel room and alone with his wife, Bruce held her fragrant softness in his arms and wondered how much love it would take to last throughout the year ahead.

Upon his arrival to Kuwait, the devastating news awaiting him nearly knocked him to his knees and the suicide bomber, doing what he was trained to do on the battle-field, left Bruce in a world with little meaning.

Autorenporträt
Born in Oklahome and sandwiched between four siblings, Billie Huante was age six when the folks packed the five kids in the old Chrysler, California bound and leaving Oklahoma in the dust. The folks rented a room in a boarding house to save money from her father's measly paycheck, to purchase a home in Sanger.

Six years later and hankering to travel, her mother convinced the family yet again, to pack the car and hit the road. They settled in Shafter California, a small town North of Bakersfield, where the folks hired on as migrant workers and moved into a shack with dirt floors and cracks in the walls.

Billie could fall in behind a row digger with a potato sack between her legs and fill it fast as the guy working the space in front of her. Yes...she could hold her own in the onion fields, potato and apricot sheds as well, but none were so frightening to her, as the grape vineyards. You work the dusty vines very carefully so as not to tangle with the stiff web of black widow spiders or the wasp devil's nest.

She cried herself to sleep many a night and dreamt of a better life. She learned to escape the hardship of the fields through mind over matter and apply her imagination to paper. Far back asBillie can remember she wanted to write and convinced herself, although lacking in education that she could write.

Then came the final indecisive moment when Billie was swayed by rejection slips and up until several years ago, her writing material was packed away, moldy and near to being tossed when she moved into an apartment.

Billie is at the computer again working on a best seller.
