Widdershins by Oliver Onions is a collection of eerie and unsettling stories that explore the supernatural and psychological realms. Onions, a British writer known for his ability to evoke a sense of unease, presents a series of narratives that challenge the boundaries between reality and the unknown. The title story, Widdershins, explores themes of fate, superstition, and the inexplicable forces that shape human lives. Through the use of atmospheric settings and psychological tension, Onions draws the reader into a world where the natural and supernatural intertwine, leaving characters - and readers alike - questioning what is real and what is imagined. The stories in this collection are marked by Onions' mastery of suspense, creating a haunting atmosphere where the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the boundaries between life and death, reality and illusion, are blurred. His sharp observations of human nature, combined with an uncanny ability to create disquieting scenarios, make Widdershins a captivating read for fans of gothic horror and psychological thrillers. Autorenporträt
George Oliver Onions (1873 - 1961), who published under the name Oliver Onions, was a British writer of short stories and over 40 novels. He wrote in a variety of genres but is perhaps best remembered for his ghost stories, notably the highly regarded collection Widdershins and the widely anthologized novella "The Beckoning Fair One". He was married to the novelist Berta Ruck. Originally trained as a commercial artist, he worked as a designer of posters and books and as a magazine illustrator during the Boer War. Encouraged by the American writer Gelett Burgess, Onions began writing fiction. The first editions of his novels were published with dust jackets bearing full-colour illustrations painted by Onions himself.
