Latter-day Saints living today revere the pioneer days of the Utah Territory. Young Mormons are inundated with stories of how their faithful ancestors crossed the plains in wagons and hand carts seeking religious freedom in Zion. In reality, the early "Saints" only braved the hardships of the overland trail to face even worse conditions once there. Brigham Young had created a theocratic police state with the sole intention of enriching himself and his henchmen. Plebeian men were forced to work for slave wages in public works projects while their daughters were coerced into wedding whichever despicable bishop or stake president fancied them. Moreover, escape was impossible because Brigham's destroying angels would cut down any who tried to leave.

In the third and final installment of Betsy's adventures, she accidentally goes through another time portal, bringing her great-great-great-great niece, Beth Kim, and a delinquent friend, Howie D'Amato, with her. Landing in the fall of 1856in Brigham Citythe trio's circumstances couldn't have been worse. Betsy must now fend off an unending queue of creepy old Mormon polygamists intent on adding her to their harems. Even worse, their troubles only multiply when the friends are taken to Great Salt Lake City wherein Miss Loveless is forced to match wits with America's most infamous murderer, thief, polygamist, swindler, sex trafficker, and traitorBrigham Young. To complicate matters, the 1857 Mormon Rebellion against the United States of America is about to beginand she and her squad are caught in the thick of it. Will Beth, Howie, and Betsy find a way to escape from Brigham's theocratic police state?

Autorenporträt
I grew up in a small town in Utah but now live in Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley, near Corvallis. I Saw the Elephant is the first book of a trilogy describing the adventures of Betsy Loveless. I chose the pen name, Elizabeth Iola Loveless, as a tribute to my Loveless ancestors who settled in Southern Oregon during the 1870s. For the same reason, I christened the main character, Betsy Loveless. My actual name is TA Thurston.
