Let me tell you a secret about women who, at night, come to visit me. I have a long story with each of them. On the wall is a huge painting painted by Georgia O'Keeffe, the mother of American modernism, who was trapped by her lover in the female category, so she fled to the desert to paint, until she passed away in 1986. In my library is a master's thesis that brings me together with the Austrian poet and novelist Ingeborg Bachmann, who burned to death in 1972 at the age of 47 in her cabin in Italy. The library also has novels by the Egyptian writer Qout Al-Qulub Al-Demerdashiya, whose life changed from a princess to a hunted woman, due to her lover's challenge to Abdel Nasser, and she was murdered by her son in Rome in 1968. They come to my house in the evening filled with a strong desire to tell. Their lovers, friends, and husbands come with them. Their lives become mixed with mine, and they become some of my closest friends. We become one world, in which the question of what brought us together becomes meaningful.
