Sunzi, given name as "e;Wu"e; and styled name as "e;Changqing"e;, was from Lean district, State Qi (Huimin county Shandong province) at the end of spring and autumn period, date of birth and death unknown, probably the same or a little later generation of Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC) the founder of Confucianism. Sunzi was the descendent of noble and famous general. His ancestor was Chenwan who had been the prince of State Chen. In 672 BC, the civil war broke out in State Chen, Chenwan had to flee to State Qi for refuge and changed his name to Tianwan. Tianshu, the 5th generation of Tianwan and the grandfather of Sunzi, was a senior general of State Qi and was awarded Lean and the family name "e;Sun"e; by the king Qijinggong for his military success in the war of defeating State Ju. In 532 BC, the civil war broke out in State Qi, Sunzi had to leave Qi for State Wu in the southern. He lived in Gusu the capital of State Wu privately and devoted himself to studing military strategy and tactics. In State Wu, Sunzi got to know Wu Zixu. Wuzixu recommended Sunzi to the King of Wu for 7 times and finally the king of State Wu had Wuzixu invite Sunzi to work for him.
