Vincent van Gogh (1853~1890) was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands of a priest family. Before 24-year-old, he worked as a salesclerk in the Goupil shop of Hague, London and Paris. Later he became a missionary and did missionary works in the Borinage mining area in the south-west of Belgium; but he was fired for sympathizing and supporting the requests of the poor colliers. After a period of extremely disappointed and poor life, he decided to extricate himself by studying the art. After 1880, he went different places to study, from Royal Art Institute of Belgium, from Anton Mo J, the landscape painter of Holland, but he decided to study on his own. He overcame various difficulties to express the world by his own understanding. Before 1886, his works were in experimenting period. In 1886 Vincent van Gogh came to Paris with his brother who was a senior clerk of Goupil shop of Hague. He got to know Toulouse Lautrec, P. Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, Georges-Pierre Seurat and Paul Cezanne and went to the parties held by impressionism painters, which greatly widened his art view. He began to paint in an absolutely different way that he used before, the color was strong and the tone was bright. In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh with P. Gauguin went to Arles in the south of France to paint for as long as one year, it was the important time for him that his art style came into being. He and P. Gauguin began to express different viewpoints of impressionism, but they both showed great interest in expressionism and symbolism, so they had planned to found a style of "e;the southern impressionism"e; or "e;the separated impressionism"e;. Later, the relationship between van Gogh and P. gauguin got worse, P. Gauguin left away. Vincent suffered mental illness after the event that he cut off one of his ears, so no any groups were founded. In 1890, Vincent van Gogh went back to Paris when his mental illness got a little better after a long time of hospitalization in Saint Remy De Mo Sol mental hospital. He lived in Auver-Sur-Oise under the medical treatment by Dr. Gachet and worked harder on painting, works like "e; portrait of Dr. Gachet"e; and "e;the church at Auvers"e;. But on October 27, 1890, after the quarrel with Dr. Gachet, Vincent van Gogh suddendly shoted himself and ended his life.
