Year of the Dog is the second poetry collection by Deborah Paredez. Her previous books are the poetry collection This Side of Skin (Wings Press, 2002) and the critical study Selenidad: Selena, Latinos, and the Performance of Memory (Duke University Press, 2009).

Paredez is co-founder of CantoMundo, a national organization for Latinx poets. She is a well-known member of the Poetry Coalition and is regularly in contact with the directors at the Academy of American Poets, Cave Canem, Kundiman, Poets House, the Poetry Society, Poetry Foundation, and other poetry organizations.

In addition to her work for CandoMundo, Paredez is widely known for her research on Latinx identity and culture. She appeared on media outlets nationwide for interviews on her book about the Latina pop icon Selena, including appearances in The New York Times, NBC News, NPR's All Things Considered, CNN, The Washington Post, Village Voice, et al.

Year and the Dog taps into the growing call for a focus on diversity in U.S. history and cultural studies. The collection shines a spotlight on the unsung role of nonwhite women as change-makers during the Vietnam era.

Additionally, the collection draws attention to the large and forgotten number of Mexican-American immigrants who served as soldiers during the Vietnam War, representing an estimated 19.4% of casualties in Vietnam despite making up a conservatively estimated 11.9% of the U.S. population at the time.

The collection includes over a dozen unpublished images of the Vietnam War taken by the author's father as well as several text-image collages that deconstruct and recontextualize famous images from the Vietnam era, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Terror of War" (Nick Ut/AP, 1972) and "Kent State Shootings" (John Paul Filo, 1970).

Year of the Dog will be published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Kent State University and Jackson State University shootings in 1970, both of which feature prominently in the collection.

Autor

Deborah Paredez is a poet, performance scholar, and cultural critic. Her poetry and prose explore the workings of memory, the legacies of war, and feminist elegy. She is author of the critical study, Selenidad: Selena, Latinos, and the Performance of Memory (Duke University Press, 2009) and of the poetry collection This Side of Skin (Wings Press, 2002). She also serves as Series Co-Editor of the CantoMundo Poetry Book Prize awarded annually to a collection by a Latinx poet. Her poetry and essays have appeared in a range of publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Boston Review, Poetry, Poet Lore, and the anthology, Inheriting the War: Poetry and Prose by Descendants of Vietnam Veterans and Refugees (Norton 2018).

Paredez received her PhD in Interdisciplinary Theatre and Performance at Northwestern University and her BA in English at Trinity University. Her work has been shaped by her encounters with women of color, feminism, formalist poetry, diva performances, and by her experiences as the daughter of a Vietnam veteran immigrant father and a mother whose nursing skills could patch up many wounds. Born and raised in San Antonio, she has lived on both coasts, endured a handful of Chicago winters, and taught American poetry in Paris. She currently lives with her husband, historian Frank Guridy, and their daughter in New York City where she is a professor of creative writing and ethnic studies at Columbia University and Co-Founder and Co-Director of CantoMundo, a national organization for Latina/o poets.
