"The Day We Celebrate" is a story written by the popular American short story writer O. Henry (1862–1910). A parrot, mindlessly repeating memorized words, made his friends remember the days of hardship on the banana plantations of distant Costa Rica.
The writer also became famous for his stories "The Pharaoh and the Chorale", "The Detectives", "The Moment of Victory", "Law and Order", "The Scarlet Dress", "A Thousand Dollars", "The Bagdad Bird" and "The Order of the Golden Ring".
O. Henry, whose real name was William Sydney Porter, is considered the founder of the "fairy tale of the big city" genre, where sparkling humor is combined with deep philosophical meaning.
