Watson rents a house in the town of Reigate in Surrey so that Holmes, exhausted by the previous investigation, can rest in a rural idyll.
A burglary takes place in one of the neighboring houses, during which unrelated and not at all valuable things were stolen. William Kiruon, the coachman, was also killed, and a piece of a note was found in his hand.
From a fragment of the note, the detective concludes that it was written by two related men, however, one of them is younger, the other is older. Also, the time indicated in it coincides with the time of the coachman's murder...
