Odetta Holmes, allgemein bekannt als Odetta, war eine amerikanische Sängerin, Schauspielerin, Komponistin und Aktivistin für Bürger- und Menschenrechte, die auch als "Stimme der Bürgerrechtsbewegung" gilt. Sie wurde größtenteils als American Folk Artist gesehen, obwohl ihr Repertoire auch Blues und Jazz umfasst. Sie war eine der Schlüsselfiguren der American Folk Music in den 1950er und 1960er und beeinflusste Künstler wie Bob Dylan, Joan Baez und Janis Joplin. Martin Luther King Jr. nannte sie die "Königin der amerikanischen Folk Music". Ihre Karriere begann in einem Theater, woraufhin sie Teil der American Folk Music und eine bekannte Performerin in den 1950ern wurde. Ihre erste Live-Aufnahme machte sie 1954.
