Bill Haley kam als William John Clifton Haley 1925 in Highland Park, Michigan/USA zur Welt. Er begann seine Karriere als Countrysänger bei den "Down Homers". 1948 gründete er "The Four Aces Of Western Swing". 1949 nannte er seine neue Band "The Saddlemen". Seine Country-Titel waren allerdings nicht sehr erfolgreich. Ab 1951 begann Haley Country und R&B zusammen zu führen und er kreierte damit einen eigenen Stil. Mit dem R&B-Klassiker "Rocket 88" - einem Original von Jackie Brenston und "Rock The Joint" - einem R&B-Hit von Jimmy Preston, aus dem Jahre 1949 - reichte es zwar nicht für die nationalen Charts, aber Haley und seine Mannen erregten enorme Aufmerksamkeit. Das Jahr 1953 brachte mit "Crazy Man Crazy" und "Fractured" die ersten Charterfolge. 1954 brachten die Titel "Shake Rattle And Roll" und Dim Dim The Lights" weitere Hitparaden-Erfolge. Aber erst 1955 gelang ihm mit "Bill Haley & His Comets" eine Weltkarriere als "Vater des Rock & Roll". Auslöser des Rock & Roll Booms war der Spielfilm "Blackboard Jungle" (Deutsch: "Die Saat der Gewalt"), mit Glenn Ford in der Hauptrolle. Im Film war Bill Haley zwar nicht zu sehen, aber seine Nummer "Rock Around The Clock" war dort zu hören. Die Platte wurde zu einem Millionseller. In den Folgejahren erschienen Haley s Platten weltweit in schöner Regelmäßigkeit auf vorderen Plätzen der jeweiligen Charts. Bill Haley starb 1981.
