Purcell war nicht nur ein erfolgreicher Komponist von Kirchen- und Hofmusik, sondern hat auch viel für das Theater komponiert, darunter mehrere Opern, Halbopern und Maskenspiele.

Jessye Norman, geboren in Augusta, Georgia, ist eine weltberühmte Sopranistin. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen dekoriert. Sie gewann 5 Grammys, wurde für ihre Kunst und ihr umfangreiches humanitäres Engagement 1997 mit dem United States Kennedy Center Honor ausgezeichnet, sie bekam mehrere Ehrendoktorhüte verliehen und in ihrer Heimatstadt Augusta wurde ein Amphitheater nach ihr benannt.
