Judas Maccabaeus gehörte zu Händels Lebzeiten und bis ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein zu seinen am häufigsten aufgeführten Oratorien. War das Werk 1746 ganz auf den Herzog von Cumberland und seinen Sieg über den katholischen Thronprätendenten Charles Edward Stuart gemünzt, konnte es danach auf jeden anderen Kampf für die nationale Idee angewandt werden. Abgesehen von effektvoller musikalischer Wehrertüchtigung bietet es eine Fülle an musikalischen Höhepunkten, welche die heutige Vernachlässigung unverständlich macht. Laurence Cummings hat bei den Göttinger Händelfestspielen 2018 eindrucksvoll bewiesen, dass das Stück auch heute noch begeistern kann und zwar rein musikalisch!
