Mulligans Arbeit als Arrangeur, Komponist und Bariton-
Saxophonist. Mit seiner eher schwerfälligen, dunklen
Klangfarbe war das Bariton-Sax lange Zeit nicht als
Soloinstrument anerkannt, doch Mulligan spielte es mit
zuvor nicht gehörter Leichtigkeit und Eleganz. Als jüngster
von vier Brüdern lebte der gebürtige New Yorker Gerald
Joseph "Gerry" Mulligan schon als Teenager an vielen
Orten der USA und lernte nacheinander Klavier, Klarinette,
Alt-, Tenor- und schließlich Baritonsaxophon spielen.
Unsere Box präsentiert 19 Original-Alben, für alle Jazz-
Liebhaber eine wahre Fundgrube mit Gastmusikern wie
Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Ben Webster
und vielen anderen. Mulligan gilt als Wegbereiter für den
sogenannten West Coast Jazz; ab Ende der 1950er Jahre
schrieb er auch Filmmusik und gründete seine 13-köpfige
Concert-Jazz- Band, die auf Platten und live zur führenden15
ig Band der frühen 1960er Jahre wurde.
