Die Wurzel des Gospels sind Spirituals, die in Amerika während der Sklaverei im 17. Jahrhundert entstanden. In den Texten geht es fast ausschließlich um religiöse Inhalte und sie erzählen vom Leben der unterdrückten Menschen und ihrem Glauben an Gott. Die Edwin Hawkins-Singers brachten den Gospel sogar in die Hitlisten, als 1969 zwei Millionen Singles von "O happy Day" verkauft wurden. Außer dem Golden Gate Quartet und Mahalia Jackson hören wir auf diesen zehn CDs auch Künstler, die man nicht unbedingt mit dieser Musikrichtung in Verbindung bringt: die Rock`n`Roller Little Richard und Jack Scott sowie Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte und Johnny Cash. Sie singen ebenso wie Pat Boone, Elvis Presley und Hank Williams mit spürbarer Emotion von der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben und vom Vertrauen in die göttliche Kraft.
