Ich kann nur hoffen, dass die schwedische Doom-Legende CANDLEMASS ihre Ankündigung, "Psalms For The Dead" wäre ihr letztes Studio-Album, nicht einhält - es wäre sehr schade, wenn der Schwanengesang von CANDLEMASS (zumindest was die Studioarbeit betrifft, denn an der Live-Front soll uns die Band ja
weiterhin erhalten bleiben) eines der schlechteren Outputs ihrer Karriere darstellt. Es dürfte klar sein, dass "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" nicht zu toppen ist, insofern sollte man nicht jede CANDLEMASS-Veröffentlichung an dem Debutalbum messen. Aber neben den 80er Alben mit Messiah Marcolin (und dem sträflich unterbewerteten "Chapter VI" Album) hat die Band seit der Reunion 2005 drei phantastische Alben auf die Doom-Gemeinde losgelassen - vor allem "Death Magic Doom", das ich als bestes CANDLEMASS-Album (nach dem Debut...natürlich!) bezeichnen würde. Und in direktem Vergleich mit "Death Magic Doom" hinterlässt "Psalms For The Dead" einen eher zwiespältigen Eindruck - was allerdings nicht an dem überraschenden neuen Element im Sound der Band liegt: Keyboards. Davon machen CANDLEMASS auf "Psalm For The Dead" reichlich Gebrauch, meist mit prägnantem 70er Hammond Sound, was Songs wie "Siren Song" oder dem fantastischen "Dancing In The Temple (Of The Mad Queen Bee)" sehr gut zu Gesicht steht und ein fast schon URIAH HEEP mäßiges Flair versprüht. Auch der treibende Opener "Prophet" oder das episch-erhabene "Psalms For The Dead" (sicher das absolute Highlight des Albums) zeigen CANDLEMASS in überragender Bestform und sind der angekündigten letzten Studioveröffentlichung dieser Legende von Band würdig. Aber der Rest des Albums ist es, der mir Bauchschmerzen bereitet. Das zu lang geratene "Waterwitch" ist noch recht gut und erinnert vom Aufbau her sehr stark an "Demon Of The Deep" vom Vorgängeralbum, allerdings ohne dessen Klasse zu erreichen. Aber "The Lights Of Thebe", "The Killing Of The Sun" (mit dem peinlichsten "Paranoid" Ripp-Off-Riff aller Zeiten), "The Sound Of Dying Demons" und "Black As Time" sind, schlicht und ergreifend, für CANDLEMASS-Verhältnisse erstaunlich schwach. Zwar haben diese Songs alle ihre guten Momente, aber unterm Strich reicht mir das nicht. Vielleicht waren meine Erwartungen nach "King Of The Grey Islands" und "Death Magic Doom", in Verbindung mit der Ankündigung des letzten Studioalbums, auch zu hoch gesteckt; habe ich doch einen Hammer of Doom erwartet, der alles wegfegt. Dieser Erwartung wird "Psalms For The Dead" allerdings leider nur zum Teil gerecht. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass CANDLEMASS es sich doch anders überlegen und noch zumindest ein weiteres Album nachschieben. Nur Eins noch. Bitte....
