Die alttestamentarische Geschichte um Saul und David handelt von Triumph, Neid, Zorn und Großmut. Sie gab Händel eine ideale Vorlage seine geniale Fähigkeit unter Beweis zu stellen, Gefühle überzeugend in Musik zu verwandeln. Das Ergebnis war ein richtungsweisendes Meisterwerk, das zur Blaupause nicht nur für sein eigenes Oratorienschaffen werden sollte. Die hier dokumentierte Aufführung bei den Internationalen Händelfestspielen Göttingen 2019 war u.a. dank einer überragenden Sängerbesetzung (darunter Markus Brück in der Titelrolle) und dem wie immer überzeugenden Dirigat von Festspielleiter Laurence Cummings einer der von der Presse besonders gefeierten Höhepunkte der vergangenen Saison.
