Chapter I traces his European and American careers, with special emphasis on his activities with the renowned First Piano Quartet. Later chapters explore various aspects of his style, pedagogical contributions, and selections from his ingenious spoonerisms in both German and English. Appendices include a chronological index of his compositions, a listing of reviews, recordings, programs, letters, interviews, and other documents; several complete works and excerpts, some of which are in the composer's own handwriting; and a translation of his article recalling his experiences as accompanist and arranger for the Viennese satirist Karl Kraus.

The Author: Diana Mittler-Battipaglia, the daughter of Franz Mittler, is Professor of Music and Choral Director at Lehman College C.U.N.Y. She received her B.S. and M.S. from the Juilliard School and her D.M.A. from the Eastman School of Music. At age 14, she appeared as piano soloist with the New York Philharmonic and subsequently made recordings as a flutist. She is pianist and director of the Con Brio Ensemble which concertizes widely in the New York area. Following many years at teacher and administrator in the New York public schools, she currently serves as educational consultant for New World Records, WNET, the New York City Board of Education, and the New York State Education Department.
