John Fowles wurde 1926 in Leigh-on-Sea (Essex) geboren. Er studierte in Edinburgh und Oxford, bevor er an verschiedenen Orten unterrichtete. Seit 1963 widmete er sich ganz der Schriftstellerei. Mit William Golding und Muriel Spark zählt er zu den bedeutendsten englischen Romanautoren seit 1950. Der britische Bestsellerautor ist 2005 im Alter von 79 Jahren gestorben.
