You think history is boring? That’s what I thought – but this book showed me that American history isn’t boring at all!!! It gave me a great impression of the doom for the black slaves I never realized before.

That’s what I thought – but this book showed me that American history isn’t boring at all!!! It gave me a great impression of the doom for the black slaves I never realized before.
The main character, Tom, is a slave living in the northern state Kentucky. He has a peaceful life there with a good master and a nice family. His good circumstances don’t last for long as he gets sold to a slave trader. Here starts a long journey with a lot of cruelty and inequity. As reader you discover how black people had no rights and you notice how negative some Whites thought of black people. Finally Tom ends up at a hard-hearted master called Legree living in the south of the US. Here slaves live under horrible conditions and are treated like animals. Nevertheless Tom has a great belief in God and gets new strength through his bible. He never gives up and sets his hope in God. Because of his positive attitude and sincere character, he changes the live of the people around him.
That’s what I loved about the story. Of course the book also has very sad passages which depressed me, but the wonderful thing is that Tom never loses hope. This touched my heart – I sometimes even had to cry – because of the cruelty but also of the amazing belief of Tom.
The story didn’t only affect my feelings it gave me a way better historical understanding of the time of slavery. By the way I learned political, social and economical aspects of slavery and I got a wide view of the daily life of the slaves.
This aspect was especially achieved by the sensitive and pictorial way Uncle Tom’s Cabin is written supported by an easy English.
To sum it up, I think Uncle Tom’s Cabin is one of the best books I ever read. It was fascinating and thought-provoking for readers of all ages and it still is today. So Uncle Toms Cabin definitely deserves five stars!
