An Invitation to General Algebra and Universal Constructions The book contains a lot of fascinating material in the subject area. The text focuses on general explanations of background, ideas, definitions and, above all, exercises, for which no solutions but some hints are provided. The material was derived from the author's courses at Berkeley ("course notes"). I strongly doubt whether the text could serve as an introduction to the subject: the student would either have to already know a lot about what they are supposed to learn or attend a course that is guided by the book. While using questions and exercises to engage learners is appealing from a pedagogical point of view, I think that more care needs to be taken in implementing this a approach in a text book. |
