Katy is a book blogger—a first for a character in a book. She has just moved to the middle of nowhere in Virginia. Her father died three years ago, but for Katy and her mother the pain of the lost still feels recent. Her mother hopes the move will give them a new start and help them move on. Despite how boring she thought the town would be, she's about to learn nothing could be farther from the truth.

Daemon and Dee are Katy's neighbours. Dee and her become fast friends, but Daemon just annoys her to no end or at least she wished that was the only feelings she felt near him. Daemon's feelings and reactions are very unpredictable, making him hard to read and a realistic character.

I was already a loyal fan after reading Daimon and Half-Blood. There are a lot of paranormal reads, but the Covenant series stood out for me, just like Obsidian does as well. It's YA meets Roswell, but much more interesting then the TV series ever was.

Obsidian is another captivating page-turner by Jennifer that will no doubt be throwing many curve balls in the future. I can't wait to find out how the series continues.

Desires of the Dead

I really enjoyed The Body Finder and couldn't wait any longer to read the next book in the series. Everything that I loved about the first book (the suspense, the chemistry between Violet and Jay, the mystery) was here plus a few heartbreaking moments for me, but great additions to the storyline. I understand why Violet was hurt by something Jay did, but wished she didn't act so hasty. She really scared me for a while there since I've been rooting for them from the start.

Although unlike the first book, I figured out who the perpetrators were, I still enjoyed watching the mystery unravel and was pleasantly surprised by the plot twist.

A new mysterious character named Rafe is introduced. There is no doubt in my mind he'll be playing a bigger role in the upcoming books and stirring things up between Violet and Jay. I love everything about Jay (yes, I have a crush on him) and the history their relationship is built on, but can see how a connection Rafe and Violet share might come between them in the future.

I starting this with the intention of reading slowly, but it was too much of an entertaining read to put down. I've never read about a character like Violet with her abilities until this series, which doesn't happen a lot since I read so many paranormal books. It was a good continuation to the series that I can't wait to pick up on next year.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Belly's happiest times are her summers at the beach house with her mother, brother, Conrad, Jeremiah and their mother, Susannah. The difference between previous summers and now is that (hint: the title) more than one boy is starting to take notice of her.

When you see the title or read the synopsis, it doesn't really hint that there is more to the story than a summer vacation involving an unrequited love. There is a lot going on in the background that's only revealed in the last few chapters. Those chapters are the reason I want to know how the story continues.

I didn't understand why Belly loved summers so much, since it seems like the exact opposite most of the time. The only reason I got was Conrad. I found myself rooting for anybody, but Conrad because of his antisocial behavior until I found out the reason behind it. Then it all made sense and I felt guilty for thinking he's just another jerk with only hints of kindness now and again. That doesn't mean that he wasn't a jerk, just that it's the way he's dealing with the situation. Of course he could of handled it a little bit better like his brother Jeremiah, but Conrad is the type of guy that rarely shows any emotions and tries to completely ignore any deeper ones. Jeremiah was more likable with his funny ways and I'd hoped that Belly would fall for him. Now, I'm not so sure. I can't really picture her with Conrad or Jeremiah.

The ending of this book was unresolved and felt like the real beginning of the story for me. I hope to see the characters (Belly, Conrad & Jeremiah) mature in the next book.

The Body Finder

It starts with a glimpse into Violet's childhood, showing that she's never been an ordinary girl. Through what she describes as echos, Violet can sense dead animals and even bodies. She can also differentiate between something that has died naturally or been killed. Luckily for Violet, she has only come across a body once... until now.

I love this book and don't know why I didn't read it sooner. It has some of my favourite genres (YA, paranormal, mystery/thriller, romance) all in one great read. I love the friendship between Violent and Jay as much as I envy it and how it started when they were kids with the possibility now to develop into something more. Jay is such a great guy and very protective of Violet. He is the only one who knows and keeps her gift a secret besides her family. Violet is very sweet and it was easy to feel a connection to her from the beginning. I can't imagine how hard it must be for them to make the transition from best friends to a romantic relationship. Kimberly Derting had fun making me wonder if it would ever become more by teasing me with their hand holding and affection towards each other.

I've been on a mystery/thriller kick lately, but always thought YA books in the same genre might have too many restriction and wouldn't be as thrilling because it's aimed at a younger market. Maybe I was wrong or (and I'm leaning this way) Kimberly Derting writes fantastic plots that anyone can enjoy.

It's a fast-paced thrilling page turner that I can't wait to continue in Desires of the Dead, where I think things are only going to get more complicated.
