Great book, I really enjoyed it. Every sentence is a charm and the storyline is thrilling and entertaining. Gordenstein manages to juggle with the contradictions of Brazil and its people, never falling into cliches. The story's background is the military dictatorship in the 1970's, but the book provides more a social, rather than a historical or political portrait – unsparing, yet romantic. You can't change the whole world nor the whole country, but you can change the little bits around you to build a small, perfect place. So does Truman DeVoto. He grows into your heart as the other characters in the book do, wether fishermen or ministers. I recommend "A Small, Perfect Place" to all Brazil lovers, travelers, adventurers and local heroes. Or to those who just want to enjoy good literature.
