The contributions address a wide range of fascinating topics: the marital regime in Damascus, narrative strategies in biographies of Hanbali judges, knowledge brokerage and knowledge specialisation, the political order of the Mamluk sultanate, the Zawawi presence in Ayyubid and Mamluk times, legal change and economic growth, Islamic philosophy, and the Islamization of Egypt and Syria. All contributions lead to a better and more sophisticated understanding of the Mamluk society. The contributors of this volume are fellows of the Annemarie Schimmel Research College "History and Society of the Mamluk Era" at the University of Bonn. In this volume, they present their research produced at the College in the last two years.§§New perspectives on the Mamluk Era
