This is a publication of PhD Mariana Cortez''s research work on the graphic composition of children''s books in Portugal and Brazil, from 1980 to 1990 and during the first decade of the twenty- first century. The above mentioned corpus is based on the selection of authors Manuela Bacelar, from Portugal, and Roger Mello, from Brazil, two reknown writers of children''s literature who excellently intertwine verbal and visual texts to convey meaning. In order to achieve this goal, both authors make use of a wide range of strategies and relations among semiotic systems. Cortez examines Bacelar''s "O Dinossauro", "A Sereiazinha" and "Sebastião" as well as Mello''s "Jardins", "Desertos", "Fita Verde no Cabelo" and "Vizinho, Vizinha". Since Bacelar and Mello play different roles in each of their books, it is worth analyzing the contents of their publications.
