This book explores how young people conceptualiseaddiction to smoking and, the relationshipbetween young people's addiction beliefs andintentions to smoke cigarettes. Addiction to smokingis a major health problem, not just for adults, butalso for young smokers, up to 60% of whom aredependent on nicotine. However, anti-smokingprevention efforts targeted at young peoplegenerally emphasise ill-health effects and littleattention is paid to addiction education which isgenerally considered relevant only to adult smokingand cessation efforts. As a consequence, youngpeople appear to have many misconceptions andunrealistic ideas about addiction, which possiblyinfluence their initial decisions to take upsmoking. Understanding these conceptions isimportant for anti-smoking education and may assistin the development of primary prevention andcessation intervention strategies targeted at youthpopulations.
